However some of the scenery before this point is simply stunning – not least the wooded lakeland scenery around Ellesmere. All in all an excellent choice of route for canal boat hire. There are numerous Pubs and restaurants on this Canal to suit all tastes. Leaving Whixall, it takes around 3 hours cruising to reach Ellesmere.

A return trip to Llangollen is from Whixall is very leisurely in one week. In the peak summer months the progress is slower due to the popularity of the canal – which means more hours spent cruising. It really depends on how energetic you feel! There are only two locks to negotiate on your trip to the aqueduct and beyond. Therefore, the pace is very easy and there is plenty of time to stop, moor up and explore your surroundings… Read More

Anderton Boat Lift

IMG_0171-320x198

Due to the high numbers of locks many of which are incorporated into flights, we recommend a crew of four – but an energetic couple will manage it ok!!

The point of access from Whixall involves cruising up the Llangollen Canal to Hurleston which will take approximately one and a half days. Turning left onto the Shropshire Union Canal will, after 30 minutes deliver you to Barbridge junction where a right turn will take you up towards Middlewich.

At Middlewich you can then decide which way you wish to travel – clockwise via the Anderton boat lift above, or anticlockwise continuing South on the Trent and Mersey canal.

The Cheshire Ring is made up of the Macclesfield Canal and parts of the Trent and Mersey, Bridgewater, Rochdale, Ashton and Peak Forest Canals. Its scenery ranges from the upland views of the Macclesfield Canal as it skirts the edge of the Pennines, the gentle rolling Cheshire countryside, industrial areas and the bustle and nightlife of urban Manchester. Typical canal features include narrow locks, aqueducts and tunnels. The towpath extends all the way round the Cheshire Ring with the exception only of the Preston Brook Tunnel, the Hyde Bank Tunnel near Romiley, and the Saltersford and Barnton Tunnels near Anderton. All of these have footpaths over the tunnels.

The Four Counties Ring

This route will take you through the Counties of Staffordshire, Cheshire, Shropshire and West Midlands.
Totalling 129 miles with 113 locks plus one…

tunnel just under 2 miles long, the ring should take around 2 weeks cruising. When we were based at Tattenhall in Cheshire, a family managed it in one week aboard “The Owl” – but this is fairly extreme!

Realisticly, you will find that ten days is the minimum feasible cruising time dependent on canal traffic! Two weeks however will allow a more leisurely pace from Whixall allowing more time for sight seeing and canal side food and drinks.

The canals you will be cruising include:

The Llangollen Canal between Whixall on the Prees Arm and Hurleston Junction.

The Shropshire Union Canal from Hurleston to Barbridge Junction – and from Autherley Junction in Wolverhampton on your return journey.

Middlewich Arm of the Shropshire Union Canal; between Middlewich and Barbridge Junction, Wardle in Cheshire.

Trent and Mersey Canal; between Middlewich in Cheshire and Great Haywood Junction in Staffordshire.

The Staffordshire and Worcester Canal; between Haywood Junction, Great Haywood, in Staffordshire and Autherley Junction in Wolverhampton in the West Midlands… Read More
